It was part of the Grand Chess Tour, but dropped out over disagreements about sponsorship and organization. Now primarily sponsored by Altibox, the tournament will feature one of the strongest fields of the year. Here is a link to its official Web site.
The tournament was supposed to have included Sergey Karjakin, who won the 2016 Candidates tournament, but he dropped out only days before it was to begin, citing exhaustion and his desire to prepare for the World Championship match in November in New York City. The organizers were unstandably not pleased, but they have found an exceptional replacement in Li Chao of China. Li postponed his wedding in order to play.
The one player who is likely to have the hardest time is Nils Grandelius of Sweden who gained entry by winning a qualification tournament in March.
