The Grand Prix is an important part of the cycle of the World Championship. The top two in the standings at the end of the series qualify for the biennial Candidates’ tournament to select a challenger for the World Championship.
The participants in the Grand Prix qualify based on world rankings, past performance and a few are selected by FIDE and Agon Limited, its commercial partner in organizing the World Championship cycle. All players are among the top 25 or so in the world.
