For the eighth consecutive year, the open and women’s chess championship will be in St. Louis at the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis. Both the open championship and the women’s championship will have 12 players. The tournament’s will be streamed live on the official Web site.
The defending champions are Hikaru Nakamura and Irina Krush.
The prize fund has not been announced, but last year’s prize fund for the open section was $175,000, with $45,000 for first place, and the women’s prize fund was $75,000, with $20,000 for first.
At the conclusion of the 2016 championship, the top three finishers in the open section will compete in a round-robin blitz tournament with ex-World Champion Garry Kasparov.
