There will be a third edition of the Millionaire Open, the only open tournament to offer $1 million in prizes. This year, instead of being in Las Vegas, it is moving to Atlantic City.
The player list is, as yet unknown, but last year’s champion was Hikaru Nakamura. If he does not win the Candidates tournament in Moscow, it is likely he would play and try to once again win the $100,000 first prize for the top section. As in the past two editions, there are likely to be many other world-class players.
The organizers of the tournament have explained on their Web site that the tournament is moving to Atlantic City, partially as a cost-saving measure. Indeed, the announcement of the 3rd edition of the tournament said that they had considered cancelling the tournament altogether up until mid-January. It seems possible that if it is not a financial success this time, there may not be a fourth edition.
