The World Championship match is the pinnacle of the chess world and is played every two years. 

Magnus Carlsen, the current world champion, won the title in 2013 against Viswanathan Anand of India in a match played in Chennai, Anand’s home town. 

Carlsen then successfully defended his title against Anand in 2014, in a match played in Sochi, Russia. 

Next year’s match will be played in the United States, with San Francisco and New York as the leading contenders for the site of the contest. The match will be a best-of-12 games, with the first player to achieve 6.5 points declared the champion.

The challenger for Carlsen will be determined in March by the winner of the Candidates’ tournament. The Candidates’ will be played in Moscow and features eight of the best players in the world.
