Oyuncu bilgileri

Andrey Esipenko is a Russian chess grandmaster who moved from elite junior success into the world championship cycle unusually quickly. He won the European Under-10 Championship in 2012, then added both the European Under-16 and World Under-16 titles in 2017. His global breakthrough came at Tata Steel 2021, where he defeated Magnus Carlsen in classical chess and broke the 2700 barrier for the first time. That performance changed how he was viewed: no longer only a top prospect, but a player capable of beating the very best in major invitationals. He added another major career milestone in 2025 by finishing third at the FIDE World Cup and qualifying for the 2026 Candidates Tournament. Esipenko’s profile is built around strong preparation, clean calculation, and the ability to keep control in positions that still offer enough tension for him to outplay elite opposition.

Russian chess grandmaster, World Cup medalist, and one of the strongest young players in elite chess.

Oyun tarzı

Esipenko’s style is controlled, resilient, and tactically accurate when the position opens. He does not usually create chaos just for effect; his stronger games tend to come from structures where he has a clear positional map and enough latent tension to exploit once the opponent drifts. That balance between preparation and practical decision-making is a big part of why he has translated junior success into adult elite competition so effectively.

  • 2021
    vs Magnus Carlsen
    Tata Steel Masters
This is still the signature win of Esipenko’s career. Beating the reigning world champion in their first classical meeting turned a strong tournament into a true international breakthrough and helped launch him past 2700 for the first time.
  • 2025
    vs Sam Shankland
FIDE World Cup, Round 6 tiebreak
Esipenko’s win over Shankland came deep in the knockout and helped carry him into the closing stages of the event. It belongs here because it was part of the run that eventually brought him a Candidates spot.
  • 2025
    vs Nodirbek Yakubboev
    FIDE World Cup, 3rd-place match
This was one of the most consequential wins of his career. Esipenko won the match without needing tiebreaks, secured third place, and with it the final qualification spot for the 2026 Candidates.
  • 2021
    vs Radoslaw Wojtaszek
    Tata Steel Masters
This was one of the important wins behind Esipenko’s outstanding Wijk aan Zee performance. It showed that the Carlsen result was not a one-off headline, but part of a genuinely elite event.

Açılış repertuvarı

Esipenko’s repertoire is broad, but still quite coherent. With White, he often works through Indian Game structures, the London System, and practical anti-Sicilian setups. He is also comfortable in queen’s-pawn positions that can transpose into more classical central structures. With Black, recurring choices include the Caro-Kann Defense, the Queen’s Gambit Declined, and solid Ruy Lopez systems.
