Oyuncu bilgileri

Nikolas Theodorou is a Greek chess grandmaster and one of the most important Greek players of the current generation. Born in Athens, he became a grandmaster in 2021 and first drew broader international attention with his individual silver medal at the 2022 Chess Olympiad. His real breakthrough into the upper professional tier came in 2025, when he won the UzChess Cup Challengers and then the Biel Challengers, two strong events that pushed him into the world top 100 for the first time. He followed that rise with headline individual wins over elite opposition, including victories against Gukesh in the 2025 Grand Swiss and Gawain Jones in the 2025 London Chess Classic. By April 2026 he remained in the top 100, with a peak classical rating of 2656. Theodorou now looks less like an occasional upset specialist and more like a fully established top-level grandmaster.

Greek chess grandmaster, Olympiad silver medalist, and winner of UzChess Challengers 2025 and Biel Challengers 2025.

Oyun tarzı

Theodorou’s style is active, modern, and tactically alert, but it is not built on chaos alone. A lot of his best results come from flexible opening choices that let him steer the game into strategically imbalanced positions where calculation still matters. That makes him especially dangerous in strong opens and hybrid event formats, where adaptability is often more valuable than one fixed specialty. His 2025 season showed exactly that balance: he won by preparation, initiative, and sustained tournament control rather than by isolated brilliancies alone.

En iyi oyunlar

  • 2024
    vs Fabiano Caruana
    U.S. Masters
Theodorou’s win over Caruana was the result that made the broader chess world pay attention. Beating a player of Caruana’s stature in a major U.S. open pushed him into sole first place late in the tournament and marked him as a player ready for bigger stages.
  • 2025
    vs Ma Qun
    UzChess Cup Challengers
His final-round win over Ma Qun completed a 6.5/9 finish and secured first place in Tashkent. In career terms, this was one of the key tournament victories behind his move into the top 100.
  • 2025
    vs Gukesh D
    FIDE Grand Swiss
Defeating the reigning world champion in Samarkand was one of the biggest single-game results of Theodorou’s career. It was the kind of win that instantly shifted how widely he was perceived at elite level.
  • 2025
    vs Gawain Maroroa Jones
    London Chess Classic
Theodorou’s win over the defending champion in round two moved him into the shared lead. It also reinforced that his 2025 rise was carrying over into strong closed events against seasoned grandmasters.

Açılış repertuvarı

Theodorou’s repertoire is one of the clearest among the newer top-100 players. As White he often chooses flexible queen’s pawn and flank-opening systems, while with Black he is very comfortable in dynamic counterattacking structures.
