Le Quang Liem is a Vietnamese chess grandmaster and the strongest Vietnamese player of his era. He became a grandmaster at 15, won the 2013 World Blitz Championship, later captured the 2019 Asian Championship, and has remained Vietnam’s leading name at Olympiads and top international events for well over a decade. In recent years, he has balanced elite competition with life in the United States, where he has also been closely associated with Webster University chess. His classical career found another strong peak in 2024, when he won the Biel Grandmaster Triathlon for the third straight year and pushed his classical rating to a career high of 2741. By April 2026, he was still in the world top 20 with a 2731 FIDE rating. Liem’s game is known for tactical sharpness, but his longevity at the top has come from something broader: disciplined preparation, practical speed, and an ability to adapt across classical, rapid, and blitz formats.

He has tactical vision and has always been dangerous in fast formats, but his long run near the top has depended just as much on disciplined positional play and strong opening structure. He tends to choose systems that are sound enough for classical chess yet flexible enough to create practical chances, which is one reason he has stayed relevant across several different eras of elite competition.
