Igor Kovalenko
GM
Oyuncu bilgileri
Igor Kovalenko is a Ukrainian chess grandmaster who has built his career through open-tournament resilience, fighting spirit, and sustained team-event strength. Born in Novomoskovsk, he became a grandmaster in 2011, won the Latvian Championship twice during the years he represented Latvia, and finished second at the 2016 European Individual Championship. He later won the 2019 Riga Technical University Open and, after returning to represent Ukraine, added one of the most remarkable late-career team performances of 2025. At the European Team Championship in Batumi, Kovalenko helped Ukraine win the open title and also took individual gold on board four. His career has not followed the standard super-tournament path, but that is part of what makes it distinctive: many of his biggest achievements came through open events, national championships, and team competitions where consistency and nerve mattered as much as rating.
Oyun tarzı
Kovalenko’s style is direct, stubborn, and highly practical. He is willing to take on structural imbalance if it gives him active play, but he is equally capable of grinding from quiet queen’s-pawn positions and simply outlasting opponents move by move. His career is full of strong open-event and team results, and that is not accidental: his chess is especially effective in formats where resilience, fighting spirit, and stamina are rewarded over many rounds.
