Oyuncu bilgileri

Eltaj Safarli is an Azerbaijani chess grandmaster and one of the most experienced players in Azerbaijan’s modern grandmaster generation. He became a grandmaster in 2008, won the World Youth Under-10 Championship in 2002, and later claimed the Azerbaijan Championship in 2010 and 2016. At his peak he reached a classical rating of 2694 and a world ranking of No. 46, placing him close to the elite threshold. What makes his current profile especially notable is the quality of his return: after years outside the very top tier, strong performances in Indonesia, Germany, and the European Club Cup helped bring him back into the world top 100 by the 2026 lists. Safarli’s chess combines long-term professional experience with sharp theoretical instincts, particularly in active Black openings and classical king-pawn structures.

Azerbaijani chess grandmaster, two-time national champion, and former world top-50 player.

Oyun tarzı

Safarli’s style is active, theoretical, and very comfortable in imbalanced positions. He is not a passive consolidator; much of his best work comes when the opening already contains tension and both sides are required to calculate accurately. At the same time, his recent comeback into the top 100 suggests more than just tactical sharpness. It reflects professional consistency across multiple tournaments and the ability to keep scoring over full events rather than only through isolated upsets.

En iyi oyunlar

  • 2013
    vs Bassem Amin
    FIDE World Cup
Safarli eliminated Amin 1.5–0.5 in the first round, a highly respectable World Cup result against one of Africa’s strongest grandmasters. It was an important career result because it confirmed he could convert rating strength into knockout-stage success.
  • 2025
    vs S.P. Sethuraman
    Indonesia GM Chess Tournament
Safarli’s win over Sethuraman was one of the key results in the event he won with 8.5/11. In a tournament that later fed directly into his return to the top 100, this was one of the most important recent classical victories on his record.
  • 2025
    vs Novendra Priasmoro
    Indonesia GM Chess Tournament
His round-nine win over Priasmoro kept him clear of the field in Bandung and helped make the final title push possible. It stands out because it came in the critical closing stretch of a tournament that materially changed his rating trajectory.
  • 2025
    vs Velimir Ivic
    European Team Chess Championship
Safarli was the only Azerbaijani player to score in the decisive match against Serbia, beating Ivic while the overall team battle slipped away. Even in defeat for Azerbaijan, it was a strong recent individual result against a high-level opponent.

Açılış repertuvarı

Safarli’s repertoire has a clear theoretical identity. His profile is strongly associated with Sicilian Taimanov positions as Black, while with White he is very comfortable in classical 1.e4 e5 structures, especially the Giuoco Piano. His long-term practice also includes dynamic queen’s pawn positions, including Grünfeld-type structures.
