Yangyi Yu

Oyuncu bilgileri
Yu Yangyi is a Chinese chess grandmaster and one of the most accomplished players of his generation outside the constant spotlight of the title cycle. He became a grandmaster in 2009 before turning 15, won the World Junior Championship in 2013, the Chinese Championship three times, and the Asian Championship in 2014. He also played a major role in China’s team successes, winning Olympiad gold in 2014 and 2018 and World Team Championship gold in 2015 and 2017. Yu reached a peak classical rating of 2765 in 2018 and remained an elite all-format player for years afterward. On the April 2026 FIDE list, he is rated 2717 and ranked world No. 23. His résumé is built less on one dramatic cycle breakthrough and more on consistent high-level results, especially in open tournaments, team events, and fast-chess competitions where his practical strength shows clearly.
Oyun tarzı
Yu’s style is controlled, adaptable, and quietly dangerous. He is not usually framed as the most flamboyant player in elite chess, but his results show a competitor who handles many different formats well and rarely looks uncomfortable in theoretical positions. He is especially strong in structures where clean calculation and practical judgment matter more than spectacle, which is one reason he has stayed relevant for so long across both classical and rapid events.

Açılış repertuvarı
Yu’s repertoire is balanced, classical, and very well suited to high-level all-format chess. His White openings are led by the Ruy López, Open Sicilian, and Petrov / Scotch-related central structures, while with Black he is especially associated with the Ragozin, QGD-Catalan structures, Rossolimo / anti-Sicilian setups, and the Petrov. Yu is comfortable in both heavy theory and more strategic queen’s-pawn positions.
