NIkolas Theodorou
GM
Player Details
Nikolas Theodorou is a Greek chess grandmaster and one of the most important Greek players of the current generation. Born in Athens, he became a grandmaster in 2021 and first drew broader international attention with his individual silver medal at the 2022 Chess Olympiad. His real breakthrough into the upper professional tier came in 2025, when he won the UzChess Cup Challengers and then the Biel Challengers, two strong events that pushed him into the world top 100 for the first time. He followed that rise with headline individual wins over elite opposition, including victories against Gukesh in the 2025 Grand Swiss and Gawain Jones in the 2025 London Chess Classic. By April 2026 he remained in the top 100, with a peak classical rating of 2656. Theodorou now looks less like an occasional upset specialist and more like a fully established top-level grandmaster.
Playing Style
Theodorou’s style is active, modern, and tactically alert, but it is not built on chaos alone. A lot of his best results come from flexible opening choices that let him steer the game into strategically imbalanced positions where calculation still matters. That makes him especially dangerous in strong opens and hybrid event formats, where adaptability is often more valuable than one fixed specialty. His 2025 season showed exactly that balance: he won by preparation, initiative, and sustained tournament control rather than by isolated brilliancies alone.

Opening Repertoire
Theodorou’s repertoire is one of the clearest among the newer top-100 players. As White he often chooses flexible queen’s pawn and flank-opening systems, while with Black he is very comfortable in dynamic counterattacking structures.
