Ray Robson
GM
Player Details
Ray Robson is an American grandmaster who moved from elite junior status to long-term relevance in the U.S. and international top tier. Born in Guam in 1994, he became a grandmaster in 2010 and at the time was the youngest American to earn the title. His career has been built on tactical sharpness, strong calculation, and a readiness to play ambitious chess against elite opposition. Robson won the 2023 Prague Chess Festival Masters, crossed the 2700 mark in classical chess, and has remained a regular presence in strong U.S. championships, international round robins, and team events. He was also part of the U.S. team that won Olympiad gold in 2016. In the current World Chess context, Robson stands out as a player whose ceiling has always been high and whose practical strength keeps him dangerous in both elite invitationals and deep open fields.
Playing Style
Robson’s style is dynamic, concrete, and tactically alert. He is comfortable in rich middlegames where precise calculation matters more than static labels, and many of his best results have come when the game stays sharp beyond the opening. At the same time, his stronger recent tournaments suggest a more controlled version of that style: he is not simply looking for complications, but for positions where activity and structure remain in balance. That mix makes him especially difficult to handle in events where preparation and over-the-board nerve both matter.
Best Games
- 2023vs Bogdan-Daniel DeacPrague Chess Festival MastersRobson tied for first in the round robin, then beat Deac in the playoff to take one of the biggest classical titles of his career. It remains the clearest tournament win on his résumé.
- 2025vs Vidit GujrathiQuantbox Chennai Grand MastersRobson defeated Vidit in round two of a very strong closed event in Chennai. Against a 2720-rated opponent in a field packed with elite names, it was one of his most valuable recent classical wins.
- 2022vs Jeffery XiongU.S. ChampionshipRobson’s final-round draw with Xiong was not enough to force a playoff, but it capped a title challenge that brought him clear silver and pushed him over the 2700 barrier for the first time. In career terms, that run was a major milestone.
Opening Repertoire
Robson’s repertoire is ambitious and theory-heavy. Public game collections from recent years show him returning often to main-line 1.e4 positions with White, while with Black he has frequently trusted structured queen’s-pawn systems rather than purely improvised counterplay.
