Kirill Alekseenko
GM
Player Details
Kirill Alekseenko is an Austrian grandmaster, Russian-born, who has already built one of the more unusual careers among players of his generation. He became a grandmaster in 2015, won major opens early, and then produced his biggest breakthrough in 2019, when he reached the Round of 16 in the FIDE World Cup and finished third in the Grand Swiss, breaking into the 2700 club and earning a place in the 2020 Candidates Tournament. His reputation was strengthened further by deep runs in elite events and by victories over world-class opposition, including Anish Giri in the concluding stage of the Candidates. After later switching to the Austrian federation, he remained a high-level professional and added more strong open results, including Semana Santa 2024. By April 2026 he was still inside the world top 100, with a peak classical rating of 2715 and a peak world ranking of No. 29.
Playing Style
Alekseenko’s style is balanced but dangerous. He is comfortable in technical positions, yet many of his best games come when he is allowed to combine structure with concrete calculation. That combination explains why he has been effective in both elite round robins and large Swiss events: he can absorb pressure, but he also knows when to seize the initiative. At his best, he looks like a player whose preparation and middlegame timing work together very efficiently.
Best Games
- 2021vs Anish GiriFIDE Candidates TournamentAlekseenko’s win over Giri in the final round was one of the most impressive results of his Candidates campaign. It showed that even at elite level he could punish overambition and convert against a world-class opponent.
- 2022vs Karen GrigoryanSunway Sitges Chess FestivalHis attacking win over Grigoryan was one of the signature games from his Sitges run and underlined the flexibility in his style. It was also part of a tournament stretch that helped push him upward again on the rating list.
- 2024vs Stamatis Kourkoulos-ArditisSemana Santa OpenAlekseenko’s final-round win on the top board secured clear first in Semana Santa with 8/9. In practical terms, it was the decisive game of one of his best post-Candidates tournament victories.
Opening Repertoire
Alekseenko’s repertoire is classical, flexible, and built for serious tournament play. As White he frequently enters Catalan and queen’s pawn structures, but he is also comfortable in Ruy Lopez territory. With Black he has shown both Nimzo-Indian treatment against 1.d4 and sharp Najdorf/Sicilian counterplay against 1.e4.
