Player Details

Vladimir Fedoseev is a Slovenian chess grandmaster, born in Saint Petersburg, who entered April 2026 as world No. 28 with a 2703 classical rating. He became a grandmaster in 2011, broke into the world top 100 as a teenager, and first established himself as an elite player during the second half of the 2010s. His career then gained a new chapter after he stopped representing Russia and transferred to Slovenia in 2023. Since then, his results have stayed strong: he won the 2024 European Rapid Championship, captured the 2025 Superbet Rapid & Blitz Poland title on the Grand Chess Tour, and remained highly competitive in elite classical events, including Tata Steel 2026. Fedoseev’s profile stands out because of its range. He is strong in classical chess, dangerous in rapid and blitz, and difficult to prepare for because his opening choices can shift from principled main lines to practical fighting systems without losing coherence.

Slovenian chess grandmaster, Grand Chess Tour winner, and one of the most dangerous all-format players in chess.

Playing Style

Fedoseev plays with energy, speed, and a strong practical sense of when to sharpen the game. He can handle main-line theory well, but one of his real strengths is that he does not always let opponents dictate the character of the position. In faster formats, that makes him especially dangerous; in classical chess, it gives him a useful edge against players who prefer cleaner or more predictable structures. His best recent results suggest a player who is not just resilient, but still capable of real surges in top-level events.

Best Games

  • 2025
    vs Arjun Erigaisi
    Tata Steel Masters
Beating a 2800-rated Arjun in Wijk aan Zee was one of Fedoseev’s best recent classical results. It showed he could still score cleanly against one of the most dangerous players in the world in a major invitation-only event.
  • 2026
    vs Vincent Keymer
    Tata Steel Masters
This is one of the strongest fresh wins on his card. Fedoseev beat Keymer early in the tournament, adding a high-value point against a top-five player in one of the strongest classical events of the season.
  • 2025
    vs Aravindh Chithambaram
    Superbet Poland Rapid & Blitz
Fedoseev’s late-event win over Aravindh was part of the surge that carried him to one of the most dominant Grand Chess Tour rapid-and-blitz victories of recent years. It fits this section well because it connects an elite opponent with a title-winning run.

Opening Repertoire

Fedoseev’s repertoire is broad, but its internal logic is clear. His White side is led by the Berlin Defense from the White side, Queen’s Gambit Declined, King’s Indian Attack, Caro-Kann Advance, and Trompowsky Attack. With Black, the most repeated headings are the Najdorf, anti-Canal Sicilian structures, and queen’s-pawn positions connected to Catalan / QGD setups. The overall database picture is that of a player who likes active positions but does not need chaos to create chances.
