Player Details

Maxime Vachier-Lagrave is a French chess grandmaster and one of the strongest opening specialists of the modern elite. He became a grandmaster at 14, rose to world No. 2 during his peak years, and reached a classical high of 2819 in August 2016, which placed him among the highest-rated players in chess history. His career includes three French championship titles, five Biel victories, a Sinquefield Cup title, a Norway Chess title, and second place in the 2020–21 Candidates Tournament. In faster formats, he has been even more formidable, winning the World Blitz Championship in 2021 and adding major rapid-and-blitz results across the Grand Chess Tour. On the April 2026 FIDE list, he is rated 2720 and remains inside the world top 25. His long-term relevance comes from a rare mix of deep opening preparation, tactical sharpness, and a style that stays dangerous even when theory runs for a long time.

French chess grandmaster, former World Blitz Champion, and one of the sharpest opening players in chess.

Playing Style

Vachier-Lagrave is a dynamic, highly theoretical player whose best games often begin with deep opening preparation and end in tactical control. For years he has been one of the clearest elite specialists in sharp Black defenses, especially the Najdorf and Grünfeld, and that willingness to play on the edge has shaped his identity. At the same time, his top results in blitz show that his strength is not only memorization; he also calculates quickly, handles complications well, and thrives when both players are forced to make concrete decisions under pressure.

Best Games

  • 2017
    vs Magnus Carlsen
    Sinquefield Cup
Vachier-Lagrave’s win over Carlsen became the signature result of his Sinquefield Cup title run. It was one of the biggest victories of his career and helped him finish ahead of one of the strongest fields of the decade.
  • 2021
    vs Jan-Krzysztof Duda
FIDE World Blitz Championship, tiebreak final
Vachier-Lagrave won the blitz playoff and secured the world title. It remains the defining achievement of his faster-chess résumé.
  • 2024
    vs Alireza Firouzja
    SuperUnited Croatia Blitz
This was a strong recent win over one of the most dangerous attacking players in the field. It fits the “fresh” part of his card because it shows that MVL remains highly dangerous against elite opposition in sharp positions.
  • 2021
    vs Ian Nepomniachtchi
    FIDE Candidates Tournament
Vachier-Lagrave beat Nepomniachtchi during the resumed Candidates and stayed in direct contention for first place deep into the event. Even though he ultimately finished second, this was one of the strongest games of that campaign.

Opening Repertoire

Vachier-Lagrave’s repertoire is one of the clearest and most recognizable in top-level chess. MVL’s opening choices are not just theoretical, but highly characteristic of his playing style.
