Player Details

Daniil Dubov is a Russian grandmaster known for inventive opening ideas, fast tactical vision, and an unusually original approach to modern top-level chess. He became a grandmaster in 2011 at a very young age and broke into the wider elite through a combination of creative classical play and exceptional rapid and blitz results. Dubov’s biggest international title came at the 2018 World Rapid Championship, a victory that confirmed him as one of the most dangerous players outside the very top classical circle. In recent years, he has remained a relevant figure in major knockout and fast-chess events, combining deep preparation with a willingness to take practical risks. His games are closely associated with fresh ideas, asymmetrical structures, and positions where calculation matters as much as long-term planning. That blend of imagination and courage has made him one of the most distinctive grandmasters of his generation.

Russian grandmaster, 2018 World Rapid Champion, and one of the game’s most original attacking players.

Playing Style

Dubov’s style is creative first and conventional second. He is willing to enter strategically imbalanced positions very early, often using prepared ideas to steer games away from routine theory. Even in classical events, he looks for practical pressure rather than sterile equality. In rapid and blitz, that approach becomes even more dangerous because his calculation speed and confidence in unclear positions make him difficult to handle. He is one of the rare elite players whose games can shift from deep preparation to over-the-board improvisation without losing coherence.

Opening Repertoire

Dubov’s repertoire is flexible, theory-heavy, and often designed to create imbalance early. He is comfortable in both main lines and rare sidelines, especially when they lead to rich middlegames.
