Jorden Van Foreest
GM
Player Details
Jorden van Foreest is a Dutch grandmaster and one of the leading figures of the current Dutch chess generation. He won the Dutch Championship in 2016 at a very young age, then made his biggest international breakthrough by taking the 2021 Tata Steel Masters title in Wijk aan Zee after defeating Anish Giri in a playoff. In 2025 he added a second national title, and in early 2026 he pushed further into the world elite with a major result in Prague and a career-high place on the official FIDE list. Van Foreest’s profile stands out for a rare mix of creativity, fighting spirit, and willingness to take practical risks against top opposition. He is not simply a talented theoretician: many of his best results come from positions where he keeps tension on the board and outplays strong opponents in complex middlegames. In the current World Chess context, he is one of the clearest examples of a player who has moved from national promise to established top-level contender.
Playing Style
Van Foreest’s style is creative, dynamic, and highly practical. He is willing to enter offbeat or less fashionable positions if they offer real chances to outplay the opponent later. At the same time, his best recent tournaments have shown a more mature layer to his chess: he is now converting advantages more cleanly and managing tournament momentum more effectively than earlier in his career. He is especially dangerous in positions where both sides still have multiple plans and precise calculation matters as much as opening memory.
