David W L Howell
GM
Player Details
David Howell is an English chess grandmaster and one of the most recognizable British players of his generation. He earned the grandmaster title in 2007 at age 16, became a three-time British Champion, and broke the 2700 barrier in 2015, when he reached a peak classical rating of 2712 and a peak world ranking of No. 36. His career has combined strong individual results with major team contributions, including board-three gold at the 2022 Chess Olympiad and a near-miss in the 2019 FIDE Grand Swiss, where he came close to qualifying for the Candidates. In more recent years he has also become a prominent commentator and public voice in elite chess, but his playing strength has remained fully relevant at top level, with a 2665 FIDE classical rating on the April 2026 list.
Playing Style
Howell’s style is controlled, practical, and technically strong. He is not a player who depends on chaos for winning chances; instead, many of his best results come from stable opening handling, accurate middlegame decisions, and strong endgame conversion. That profile has made him especially effective in team events and long Swiss tournaments, where consistency matters as much as brilliance. His best years at the board showed that same balance: enough tactical awareness to punish mistakes, but built on a fundamentally classical base.
Best Games
- 1999vs John NunnMind Sports Olympiad BlitzHowell’s win over Nunn made him the youngest player at the time to defeat a grandmaster in an official game. Even though it came in blitz, it remains one of the signature moments of his early rise.
- 2015vs Nicholas PertBritish Knockout Championship FinalHowell defeated Pert 4–2 in the final to win the inaugural British Knockout Championship. It stands out as one of the cleanest title-winning performances of his mature career.
- 2021vs Anton KorobovFIDE Grand SwissHis round-nine win over Korobov lifted Howell to 6.5/9 and into a share of first place late in one of the strongest Swiss events in the world. In modern classical terms, this was one of his most important high-level results.
Opening Repertoire
Howell’s repertoire is practical, classical, and very coherent. As White he is strongly associated with Alapin Sicilian and flexible queen’s pawn positions, while with Black he has long shown comfort in both Grünfeld structures and main-line 1...e5 positions.
