Player Details

Radosław Wojtaszek is a Polish grandmaster and one of Poland’s most accomplished players of the modern era. He became a grandmaster in 2005, won world and European youth U18 titles in 2004, and developed into a long-term elite grandmaster with a peak classical rating of 2750 and a peak world ranking of No. 15. Wojtaszek’s résumé combines individual titles, team value, and deep theoretical work: he is a six-time Polish champion, won the Biel Grandmaster Triathlon in 2020, remained a major force in top club events, and also worked repeatedly as Viswanathan Anand’s second in World Championship matches. By April 2026 he was still Poland’s No. 2 active player and world No. 49 on the official FIDE list. In the current chess landscape, Wojtaszek stands out as a player whose career has been built on serious opening knowledge, consistency, and the ability to stay relevant across generations.

Polish chess grandmaster, six-time national champion, and former world No. 15.

Playing Style

Wojtaszek’s style is precise, theoretical, and strategically resilient. He is extremely comfortable in sharp theory, but that does not make his chess reckless. A recurring theme in his best games is controlled aggression: he enters complex positions with confidence, then outcalculates the opponent once the position becomes concrete. That balance between preparation and practical calm is a large part of why he has remained dangerous for so long.

Best Games

  • 2021
    vs Magnus Carlsen
FIDE World Cup, Round 4, Game 2
Wojtaszek held his nerve, forced tiebreaks against the world No. 1, and turned the match into one of the headline stories of the round. Even as a draw, it was one of the most significant single games of his later career.
  • 2025
    vs Maxime Lagarde
    FIDE World Cup, Round 2
Wojtaszek advanced cleanly from the match and set up a major third-round clash. In a field where many established names were already under pressure, this was an important early step in a strong World Cup run.
  • 2025
    vs Vladimir Fedoseev
    FIDE World Cup, Round 3
One of Wojtaszek’s best recent classical match results. He beat Fedoseev in both classical games and removed a 2700-level opponent from the event without needing tiebreaks.

Opening Repertoire

Wojtaszek’s repertoire is deeply theoretical and reflects decades of elite-level preparation. Public game statistics show him strongly associated with the Sicilian Najdorf as well as White-side anti-Sicilian systems such as the Rossolimo. More broadly, his opening choices are built to keep as much strategic and tactical tension on the board as possible.
