Player Details

Pavel Eljanov is a Ukrainian grandmaster whose career has combined elite-level classical results, team reliability, and deep opening expertise. Born in Kharkiv in 1983, he became a grandmaster in 2001 and spent many years as one of Ukraine’s core top-board players. Eljanov reached a peak classical rating of 2765 and a peak world ranking of No. 6, placing him firmly among the strongest players of his generation. His résumé includes a FIDE Grand Prix victory in Astrakhan, a celebrated run to the semifinals of the 2015 FIDE World Cup, major open-tournament success, and two Chess Olympiad team gold medals with Ukraine. In April 2026 he is back inside the world top 50 and remains Ukraine’s No. 2 player on the official FIDE list. Eljanov’s standing in modern chess is built less on stylistic publicity and more on substance: clean preparation, dependable technique, and the ability to score against world-class opposition in long events.

Ukrainian chess grandmaster, former world No. 6, and 2015 FIDE World Cup semifinalist.

Playing Style

Eljanov’s style is measured, technical, and grounded in high-level opening work. He is rarely wasteful with tempi or structure, and many of his best wins come from quietly taking over a position before converting with precision. That makes him especially effective in long tournaments, where consistency matters as much as brilliance. Even his sharper games tend to feel controlled rather than impulsive, which is why he has been such a reliable match and team player over many years.
