Player Details

Jeffery Xiong is an American chess grandmaster and one of the most accomplished U.S. players of his generation. He became a grandmaster in 2015 at age fourteen, won the World Junior Championship in 2016, and crossed the 2700 mark while still a teenager. His strongest stretch at the top level came around 2018–2021, when he won major U.S. events, established himself as a regular presence near the elite threshold, and reached a peak classical rating of 2712. In more recent seasons he has remained a highly dangerous professional, returning to solid top-100 standing on the April 2026 FIDE list. Xiong’s profile is built on mature calculation, adaptability in sharp positions, and a style that combines concrete tactical awareness with the ability to stay strategically grounded against elite opposition.

American chess grandmaster, 2016 World Junior Champion, and former 2700+ player.

Playing Style

Xiong’s style is dynamic, calculating, and highly resilient. He is comfortable in sharp middlegames, but he is not a player who depends on chaos alone; many of his best results come from keeping positions under control until tactical opportunities appear. That balance helped him succeed early as a junior world champion and later as a 2700-level professional. Even when his rating has fluctuated, his games have continued to show the same core strengths: resourcefulness, practical judgment, and a willingness to fight against strong opposition.

Best Games

  • 2016
    vs Aravindh Chithambaram
    World Junior Championship
Xiong’s win over Aravindh was one of the signature games of the event he went on to win with a round to spare. It belongs among the defining results of his early career because it helped turn a promising junior run into a world title.
  • 2019
    vs Le Quang Liem
    Saint Louis Spring Classic
His tactical win over Le was one of the standout games of the tournament and a key moment in the event he won. It also fit the period when Xiong was pushing deepest into the 2700 range and looking fully established at elite-open level.
  • 2025
    vs R Praggnanandhaa
    FIDE Grand Swiss
Although the game ended in a draw, it was a significant recent result: Xiong held the top seed on board one in round one of one of the strongest open events in the world. For a player rebuilding momentum in classical chess, that was an important high-level marker.

Opening Repertoire

Xiong’s repertoire is broad, modern, and practical rather than tied to one narrow opening identity. He is comfortable in 1.e4 main lines as White and usually meets Black’s setup directly, while as Black he has long shown a willingness to choose active counterplay rather than purely neutral structures.
