Player Details

Abhimanyu Mishra is an American chess grandmaster and one of the defining prodigies of modern chess. He made history in 2021 by becoming the youngest grandmaster ever at 12 years, 4 months, 25 days, surpassing one of the game’s longest-standing age records. What has followed has been more than a record-holder’s afterglow: Mishra continued to build serious classical results, reached a peak rating of 2652 and a peak world ranking of No. 68 in 2025, and entered the world top 100 while still a teenager. His rise gained another layer in 2025, when he defeated reigning world champion Gukesh in a classical game at the FIDE Grand Swiss and added substantial rating gains across the year. By spring 2026, Mishra already looked like more than a prodigy story: he looked like a genuine long-term top-level prospect.

American chess grandmaster, the youngest GM in history, and one of the strongest teenage players in chess.

Playing Style

Mishra’s style is ambitious, calculation-heavy, and increasingly well balanced for his age. He is comfortable entering sharp theoretical positions, but his recent results suggest more than raw tactical strength: he is also learning how to hold difficult endgames and manage long classical tournaments. That matters because many prodigies shine tactically before they become truly durable professionals. Mishra already looks further along that path than most players his age.

Best Games

  • 2021
    vs Leon Luke Mendonca
    Vezerkepzo GM Mix
Mishra beat Mendonca in the game that secured his third and final GM norm, completing the youngest-grandmaster record. Few individual games in modern junior chess have carried more historical weight.
  • 2025
    vs Gukesh D
    FIDE Grand Swiss
His win over the reigning world champion was the headline result of his 2025 season. The game made him the youngest player ever to defeat an incumbent world champion in a classical game and immediately changed the scale of his résumé.
  • 2025
    vs Andrey Esipenko
    FIDE Grand Swiss
Mishra’s round-eight win over Esipenko kept him among the leaders deep into one of the strongest Swiss tournaments in the world. It was another high-value result in the event that pushed him fully into the top-100 conversation.

Opening Repertoire

Mishra’s repertoire already looks mature and modern. As White he often heads for Giuoco Piano and other mainline king’s-pawn positions, while with Black he has shown a clear preference for active Sicilian setups, especially the Najdorf and related structures, alongside solid answers to queen’s-pawn systems.
