Player Details

Aydin Suleymanli is an Azerbaijani chess grandmaster and one of the most important young players in Azerbaijan’s current generation. He won the World Youth Under-14 Championship in 2019, earned the grandmaster title in 2021, and steadily grew from elite junior into full top-100 professional. His senior breakthrough accelerated with victory in the Azerbaijan Championship in 2024, followed by major progress through 2025 and early 2026, when he reached a peak classical rating of 2653 and a peak world ranking of No. 61. He also remained in the title race until the final round of the Tata Steel Challengers 2026, which confirmed that his rise was carrying into stronger international fields. Suleymanli’s profile combines youthful ambition with genuine tournament substance, and by spring 2026 he looked like a fully established top-level grandmaster rather than just a promising talent.

Azerbaijani chess grandmaster, 2024 national champion, and one of Azerbaijan’s leading young players.

Playing Style

Suleymanli’s style is energetic, tactically alert, and clearly comfortable with prepared surprises. Two of his most visible recent successes came with queen sacrifices, which says a lot about his willingness to trust calculation when the position demands it. At the same time, his progress into the top 100 suggests more than tactical flair alone: he has also become a more stable tournament player over full events. Overall, he looks like a modern attacking grandmaster who is learning to pair creativity with consistency.

Best Games

  • 2024
    vs Mahammad Muradli
    Azerbaijan Championship Final
Suleymanli’s second-game win in the final secured his maiden national title, and he finished the match with a memorable queen sacrifice. In career terms, this was the game that turned him from leading junior into national champion.
  • 2025
    vs Murali Karthikeyan
    FIDE Grand Swiss
Suleymanli became the first player to score a win in the tournament, doing so with an opening surprise that included a queen sacrifice. It was one of the headline games of the opening round and a strong recent marker of his creativity against top opposition.
  • 2023
    vs Arjun Erigaisi
    Vugar Gashimov Memorial Rapid
His win over Erigaisi in Baku was one of the standout results of his rapid breakthrough in a very strong field. Beating an elite opponent in a home super-tournament helped broaden his profile beyond junior titles.

Opening Repertoire

Suleymanli’s repertoire is flexible but already quite recognisable. As White he often enters Ruy Lopez and queen’s-pawn structures, while with Black he is comfortable in both classical 1...e5 systems and sturdier choices such as the Caro-Kann and Queen’s Gambit Declined.
