Player Details

Pranesh M is an Indian grandmaster and one of the most notable members of India’s newest generation of rising elite players. Born in Karaikudi and coached by R.B. Ramesh, he moved from strong junior promise to full grandmaster status in early 2023, when he won the 2022–23 Rilton Cup and became India’s 79th grandmaster. His progress since then has been steady rather than accidental: he continued climbing through major open events, reached Round 3 of the 2025 FIDE World Cup, won the Challengers section of the 2025 Chennai Grand Masters, and entered the world top 100 by the 2026 rating lists. What stands out in Pranesh’s profile is the combination of practical calculation, resilience in complicated positions, and a willingness to play for full points in serious classical events. He already looks less like a junior talent and more like a long-term top-level professional in formation.

Indian chess grandmaster, Rilton Cup winner, and Chennai Grand Masters Challengers champion.

Playing Style

Pranesh tends to play ambitious, practical chess. He is comfortable in positions where calculation matters more than surface elegance, and many of his important wins come from staying alert longer than the opponent in messy middlegames. At the same time, his recent tournament results suggest more than just tactical sharpness: he has shown he can hold form across full events and convert momentum into standings points. That combination makes him dangerous in open tournaments and promising in stronger closed formats as well.

Best Games

  • 2022
    vs Aravindh Chithambaram
    Asian Continental Chess Championship
Pranesh’s win over Aravindh was one of the early breakout results of his rise. Beating a proven Indian grandmaster in a continental championship gave real weight to his norm push and showed he could already handle strong professional opposition.
  • 2022
    vs Pranav Venkatesh
    Asian Continental Chess Championship
This was another important result in the event where Pranesh completed his final grandmaster norm. In career terms, it belongs in the same breakthrough cluster as the Aravindh win because it helped turn a strong tournament into a title-defining milestone.
  • 2025
    vs Abhimanyu Puranik
    Chennai Grand Masters Challengers
Pranesh’s Round 6 win over Puranik put him into first place in Chennai and became one of the key victories behind his Challengers title. It was a timely result in a compact event where one direct win over a leading rival changed the whole tournament picture.
  • 2025
    vs Satbek Akhmedinov
    FIDE World Cup
His first-round World Cup win over Akhmedinov stood out for both calculation and nerve, including a tactical finish highlighted in the official event coverage. It was also the start of a strong World Cup run that carried him into Round 3.

Opening Repertoire

Pranesh’s repertoire is broad enough for modern elite preparation, but it already has a clear practical identity. As White he is comfortable entering mainline 1.e4 territory, while as Black he is willing to meet sharp play directly rather than relying only on quiet structures.
