Player Details

Haik M. Martirosyan is an Armenian grandmaster who has been one of Armenia’s leading players through the first half of the 2020s. Born in Byuravan in 2000, he won the World Youth Under-16 title in 2016, became a grandmaster in 2017, and soon developed into a serious force in both classical and fast chess. Martirosyan won the Armenian Championship in 2018, reached round five of the 2021 FIDE World Cup, earned bronze at the 2022 World Blitz Championship, took silver at the 2023 European Rapid Championship, and won the 2026 Agzamov Memorial. At his peak he reached a classical rating of 2708 and climbed to world No. 34. What makes his profile especially interesting is the blend of formats: Martirosyan has the tactical speed and resourcefulness to excel in blitz, but he has also produced enough strong classical results to remain relevant in the top-100 conversation. He represents the kind of modern grandmaster who can be dangerous in almost any event structure.

Armenian chess grandmaster, World Youth champion, and former world No. 34.

Playing Style

Martirosyan is a dynamic and resourceful player whose best chess comes when positions remain rich in tactical and practical possibilities. His fast-chess results suggest exceptional instinct under time pressure, but his classical record shows that he is far more than a blitz specialist. He tends to handle complications confidently, keeps looking for active resources even in difficult positions, and is often at his most dangerous once the game leaves predictable paths. That combination of speed, resilience, and tactical awareness gives him unusual flexibility across formats.

Best Games

  • 2021
    vs Shakhriyar Mamedyarov
    FIDE World Cup, Round 3
Martirosyan eliminated one of the strongest players in the field in rapid tiebreaks. That upset defined his World Cup run and pushed him into the tournament’s later stages.
  • 2021
    vs Ante Brkić
    FIDE World Cup, Round 4
After the Mamedyarov upset, Martirosyan kept the momentum going and advanced to round five. It remains one of the best classical-knockout stretches of his career.
  • 2021
    vs Levon Aronian
    World Blitz Championship
Beating Aronian during the closing stages of the event helped Martirosyan stay in medal contention and underlined how dangerous he had become in blitz against elite opposition.
  • 2026
    vs Abdimalik Abdisalimov
    Agzamov Memorial
Martirosyan’s round-eight win over the local favorite gave him the lead at the most important moment of the tournament. That point proved decisive in his eventual title run.

Opening Repertoire

Martirosyan’s repertoire is broad, but it tends to lean toward dynamic classical openings rather than sideline systems. His games show comfort in main-line 1.e4 structures with White and flexible, theory-based answers with Black.
