Player Details

Andrei Volokitin is a Ukrainian grandmaster from Lviv and one of the most durable players of Ukraine’s modern chess generation. He became a grandmaster in 2001 while still a teenager, reached the world top 20, and built a career that combines elite tournament wins with major team success. Volokitin is a three-time Ukrainian champion and was part of Ukraine’s gold-medal Olympiad team in 2004 as well as the gold-medal European Team Championship side in 2021. By April 2026, he was back inside the FIDE top 100, a sign of long-term resilience rather than a short-lived comeback. His profile remains that of a serious, well-schooled grandmaster who has stayed relevant across more than two decades of top-level chess.

Ukrainian chess grandmaster, three-time national champion, and former world top-20 player.

Playing Style

Volokitin’s style is active, concrete, and deeply shaped by classical Ukrainian chess schooling. He is comfortable in sharp positions, but the sharper feature of his game is timing rather than recklessness. Even in his later career, his best results come when he keeps the position dynamic and forces strong opponents to solve precise problems over the board. That combination of experience and tactical sharpness is a major reason he remains competitive.

Best Games

  • 2004
    vs Magnus Carlsen
    Aeroflot Open
Volokitin’s win over Carlsen became one of the signature games of his early rise. It showed that he could already beat the strongest talents of his generation in serious classical play.
  • 2005
    vs Hikaru Nakamura
    Lausanne Young Masters Final
Volokitin beat Nakamura 2–0 in the final and took one of the most prestigious youth-elite titles of that period. It was a major international marker in his early career.
  • 2025
    vs Matthias Bluebaum
    European Team Chess Championship
Volokitin’s win over Bluebaum was pivotal in Ukraine’s 2.5–1.5 victory over Germany. In team terms, it was one of his most important recent results.

Opening Repertoire

Volokitin’s repertoire is classically aggressive and has long been comfortable in sharp central battles. His best-known Black choices include active Sicilian systems, while his overall approach favors positions where piece activity matters more than early simplification.
