Player Details

Shakhriyar Mamedyarov is an Azerbaijani chess grandmaster and one of the most dangerous attacking players of the modern era. A two-time World Junior Champion, former World Rapid Champion, and multiple-time Candidates participant, he spent years in the absolute elite and reached a peak classical rating of 2820 in September 2018, one of the highest ratings ever achieved. He also climbed to world No. 2 in 2018 and has long remained Azerbaijan’s leading player. Even after that peak phase, Mamedyarov has stayed relevant through elite event wins, deep runs in top competitions, and a style that never lost its sharp edge. On the April 2026 FIDE list, he is rated 2715 and still sits comfortably inside the world top 30. His résumé is deep enough to stand on legacy alone, but his continued results show that he remains an active threat rather than only a past-era star.

Playing Style

Mamedyarov has long been one of the clearest attacking identities in elite chess. Even when he uses sound classical structures, he tends to steer the game toward positions with initiative, imbalance, and active piece play rather than sterile equality. That attacking reputation is fully deserved, but it can hide another strength: at his best, he also calculates with exceptional clarity and senses exactly when the position can support risk. That is why his best wins often feel both creative and technically justified.

Best Games

  • 2019
    vs Maxime Vachier-Lagrave
    FIDE Grand Prix Riga, Final
Mamedyarov won the event in armageddon and took one of the biggest titles of his later career. It remains a natural inclusion because of both the opponent and the championship context.
  • 2021
    vs Fabiano Caruana
    Superbet Chess Classic, Round 7
This explosive win gave Mamedyarov a full-point lead with two rounds to go in Bucharest. It was the decisive moment of one of his strongest recent elite classical tournaments.
  • 2022
    vs Vincent Keymer
    FIDE Grand Prix Berlin, Tiebreak
Mamedyarov won the first blitz game of the tiebreak and advanced to the semifinals. It fits well here because it showed his continuing ability to handle knockout pressure against dangerous younger opposition.
  • 2026
    vs Aydin Suleymanli
    Azerbaijan Championship
A win over one of Azerbaijan’s leading younger players belongs in the fresher section of his card. It helped Mamedyarov stay alive in the national knockout and showed he is still fully competitive at the top of his federation.

Opening Repertoire

Mamedyarov’s repertoire has always reflected his style: active, ambitious, and prepared to unbalance the position early.
