Player Details

Salem A.R. Saleh is an Emirati grandmaster and the strongest UAE player of his generation. He became a grandmaster in 2009, won the Asian Continental Championship in 2015, built a long record of Arab and national titles, and later reached a peak classical rating of 2690 with a peak world ranking of No. 44. His career has combined elite regional dominance with credible international results, including strong Biel performances and repeated appearances in major global events. By April 2026, he was ranked No. 82 on the FIDE standard list with a classical rating of 2640. In the current chess landscape, Salem stands out as a seasoned professional whose best chess blends experience, flexibility, and very strong practical instincts.

Emirati chess grandmaster, Asian champion, and the leading player of modern UAE chess.

Playing Style

Salem’s style is practical, resilient, and very well suited to long Swisses and mixed-format events. He is comfortable in positions where the evaluation shifts gradually rather than immediately, and many of his best tournament runs have been built on disciplined conversion rather than flashy all-out attacks. At the same time, he is fully capable of playing sharply once the position justifies it, which is one reason he has remained dangerous across classical, rapid, and blitz.

Best Games

  • 2015
    vs Vidit Gujrathi
    Asian Continental Championship
Salem’s final-round draw with Vidit was enough to secure the title and make him the first Asian Champion from the UAE. It remains one of the landmark results of his career.
  • 2018
    vs Basher Qudaimi
    Arab Individual Championship
Salem’s penultimate-round win over Qudaimi was one of the decisive steps in his title run and set up his clear first-place finish.
  • 2018
    vs Mohamed Tissir
    Arab Individual Championship
He followed the Qudaimi win by beating Tissir in the last round to finish alone on top. In tournament terms, it was the clean finish of a championship performance.
  • 2024
    vs Vaishali Rameshbabu
    Biel Challengers Triathlon
Salem beat Vaishali in the final classical phase and secured overall victory in Biel. It is one of the strongest recent tournament-clinching wins of his later career.

Opening Repertoire

Salem’s repertoire is flexible and strategically mature. Public opening summaries show recurring queen’s-pawn systems with White, including Saemisch-type Nimzo-Indian structures, while his Black repertoire often enters Sicilian positions where he keeps active counterplay available.

  • Nimzo–Indian, Saemisch structures
    1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 Bb4 4.a3

As Black
