Player Details

Shant Sargsyan is an Armenian grandmaster who represents the new generation of strong Armenian classical players. Born in Yerevan in 2002, he built his reputation through youth success, steady rating growth, and a style marked by precision, resilience, and mature decision-making. He won the World Youth Under-16 title in 2018 and earned the grandmaster title in 2019, quickly establishing himself as one of Armenia’s most important young talents. Since then, he has added strong open-tournament results, national-level performances, and serious appearances in elite international events. His rise has not been driven by hype alone but by consistent over-the-board progress in classical chess. By 2025 he had already reached a peak classical rating of 2669, and by April 2026 he stood as Armenia’s top active player on the FIDE standard list. Sargsyan’s profile is that of a player with strong foundations, improving experience, and clear long-term upside.

Armenian grandmaster, World Youth U16 champion, and one of Armenia’s leading young players.

Playing Style

Sargsyan plays with a notably mature practical sense. He is comfortable in balanced positions, rarely forces matters too early, and often relies on accuracy rather than unnecessary complications. His games show good defensive discipline, especially when he is asked to solve problems with Black. At the same time, he is not passive: when a position offers stable pressure, he is willing to nurse small advantages for a long time. That combination of patience, control, and calculation makes him a dangerous classical player and a reliable team-board presence.
