Player Details

Nils Grandelius is a Swedish grandmaster and the leading Swedish player of his generation. He became a grandmaster in 2010 and gradually established himself as Sweden’s long-term No. 1, combining strong open-tournament results with credible performances in elite invitational events. Grandelius reached a peak classical rating of 2694 and a peak world ranking of No. 44. His breakthrough stretch at the very highest level came around Tata Steel 2021, where he spent much of the event among the leaders and scored a headline win over Maxime Vachier-Lagrave. He later added the 2023 Reykjavik Open title and produced another notable recent result in the 2025 FIDE World Cup by eliminating Shakhriyar Mamedyarov. Grandelius is also respected for his opening preparation and team value, traits that have kept him relevant in both individual and national-team competition. His profile is that of a modern professional grandmaster: well-prepared, resilient, and very difficult to outplay cleanly.

Swedish chess grandmaster, longtime Swedish No. 1, and Reykjavik Open winner.

Playing Style

Grandelius is a preparation-heavy player, but not a sterile one. He is at his best when a position remains strategically rich after the opening and rewards accurate piece placement over impulsive tactics. His games often show strong defensive organization, especially with Black, and he is comfortable holding pressure until the balance shifts. At the same time, when an opening battle goes his way, he is fully capable of converting with direct, energetic play. That balance between structure and ambition has made him a very reliable presence in both elite opens and national-team events.

Best Games

    vs Maxime Vachier-Lagrave

  • 2023

    Reykjavik Open
Grandelius won in the final round and took the tournament outright on his eleventh attempt. It was a major open-event success and a reward for a long run of consistent appearances in Reykjavik.
  • 2025
    vs Shakhriyar Mamedyarov
    FIDE World Cup, Round 3
Grandelius knocked out a 2740+ opponent and reached the next stage of the World Cup. That upset was one of the strongest recent results of his classical career.

Opening Repertoire

Grandelius’ repertoire is modern, well-prepared, and often aimed at positions where structure and calculation remain in balance. FIDE coverage regularly shows him in heavyweight theoretical territory rather than sideline systems.
