Player Details

Ediz Gurel is a Turkish grandmaster and one of the strongest teenage players in world chess. Born in Bursa, he became a grandmaster in 2024 after winning the Prague Challengers, a result that also completed his final GM norm. His rise accelerated further in 2025, when he entered the Prague Masters, climbed to a peak classical rating of 2652, and broke into the world top 100. That same year he produced one of the most widely discussed single-game upsets in modern chess by defeating reigning world champion Gukesh at the FIDE Grand Swiss. By April 2026 he remained inside the top 100 and among the leading juniors on the global list. Gurel’s profile combines youth, calculation, and genuine classical-tournament substance, which is why his development already feels bigger than a typical prodigy narrative.

Turkish chess grandmaster, Prague Challengers 2024 winner, and one of the strongest teenage players in chess.

Playing Style

Gurel plays ambitious, energetic chess and is comfortable taking on strong opposition without excessive caution. He is tactically sharp, but the more interesting part of his profile is how naturally he already handles longer classical games against established grandmasters. His best recent results suggest a player who is not only dangerous in single tactical moments, but increasingly capable of carrying structure, initiative, and endgame control through full tournament runs. That is why his rise into the top 100 felt earned rather than sudden.

Best Games

  • 2024
    vs Anton Korobov
    Prague Challengers
Gurel beat Korobov in the final round to win the tournament outright and secure his final grandmaster norm. Few games can matter more in a young player’s career than the one that converts promise into the GM title.
  • 2025
    vs Velimir Ivic
    FIDE World Cup
As the youngest player in the field, Gurel scored one of the event’s first notable upsets by beating Ivic. It was an important signal that his progress could already translate to knockout world-level competition.
  • 2025
    vs Thai Dai Van Nguyen
    Prague Masters
His win over Nguyen was his first victory in a super-tournament field and a strong proof that he could do more than simply hold his own against established grandmasters. It remains one of the clearest early markers of his readiness for elite round robins.
  • 2025
    vs Gukesh D
    FIDE Grand Swiss
Defeating the reigning world champion was the defining headline result of Gurel’s 2025 season. It placed him firmly in the international spotlight and made him one of the youngest players ever to beat a reigning world champion.

Opening Repertoire

Gurel’s repertoire already looks ambitious and varied. As White he is comfortable in both classical king-pawn games and flexible flank systems, while with Black he has shown a clear willingness to fight in Sicilian structures.
