However the title doesn't just get handed to you, it's not just something thrown around. A Grandmaster is a player who has clearly shown they can compete at a high and consistent level against both strong and weaker opponents. A Grandmaster has a mastery over opening, middlegame and endgame, possesses strong tactical knowledge and intuition as well having extensive experience in gameplay.

A chess Grandmaster or GM, is a player who has performed consistently and reached a rating where they are recognised by FIDE the world chess federation as an elite player. The title stays with you for life. Young or old, you have proven your skills to the chess world. A misconception may be that a Grandmaster is a genius or has performed brilliantly every single game. On the contrary, the title is more about performing steadily across numerous tournaments, not just a single one.

How to Become a Grandmaster (GM) in Chess

So, how do you actually become a Grandmaster? There’s no easy shortcut. You need to show strong results in several big tournaments (called norms), and you also need to hit a rating of 2500 at some point.

It's not impossible, but it is a tough challenge usually taking years of practice and study. Most players even with an early start take years to reach the title, reaching it after years of commitment and focus. Learning from the losses as well as the wins, improvements really come from understanding your mistakes, where you went wrong and how to improve. Not just celebrating the wins but growing to be better after both wins and losses.
