Player Details

Alexander Donchenko is a German grandmaster from the younger generation of top European players, known for steady rating growth, strong tournament resilience, and a willingness to take on elite opposition in long events. Born in Moscow in 1998 and raised in Germany, he became an international master in 2012 and a grandmaster in 2015. His early breakthrough results included shared second at Biel Masters 2019 and clear first at the Barcelona Open later that year. He added further milestones by winning the Riga Technical University Open in 2021 and the Tata Steel Challengers in 2023, earning a place in the Masters section the following year. In late 2025 he produced the best run of his career at the FIDE World Cup, reaching the quarterfinals after eliminating Anish Giri, Matthias Blübaum, and Lê Quang Liêm. By April 2026 he remained inside the world top 100, with a peak classical rating of 2684 and a peak world ranking of No. 49.

German chess grandmaster, Tata Steel Challengers winner, and 2025 FIDE World Cup quarterfinalist.

Playing Style

Donchenko’s style is practical, composed, and well suited to large Swisses and knockout formats. He is comfortable absorbing pressure early if that gives him a clearer position later, and many of his best results have come from staying balanced while higher-rated opponents overreach. His World Cup run in 2025 also showed another side of his game: once he senses real winning chances, he is prepared to keep pressing for a long time rather than settle for safety. That combination makes him a difficult pairing in any event outside the absolute closed supertournament circuit.

Best Games

  • 2025
    vs Anish Giri
    FIDE World Cup, Round 3
One of the biggest upsets of the event. Donchenko pressed throughout the second classical game and eliminated one of the pre-tournament favorites.
  • 2025
    vs Matthias Blübaum
    FIDE World Cup, Round 4
Donchenko followed the Giri upset by knocking out another German elite player. The result sent him into the last sixteen and confirmed that his previous round was no one-off.
  • 2025
    vs Lê Quang Liêm
    FIDE World Cup, Round 5
A nerve-heavy tiebreak victory over one of the most experienced players in the field. Surviving that match was the step that pushed Donchenko into the quarterfinals.
  • 2025
    vs Nodirbek Yakubboev
    FIDE World Cup, Quarterfinal
Although Donchenko did not advance, reaching a quarterfinal against Yakubboev marked the deepest run of his career in a top knockout event and underlined his rise in 2025.

Opening Repertoire

Donchenko’s repertoire tends to be practical and modern, with a clear preference for systems that keep tension in the center and preserve winning chances.
