Player Details

Nodirbek Yakubboev is an Uzbek chess grandmaster who has developed into one of the strongest representatives of Uzbekistan’s new generation. He won the Uzbek Championship at a very young age, later added more national titles, and became a central part of the country’s rise in team chess. One of his biggest early international results came in 2022, when Uzbekistan won team gold at the Chess Olympiad and Yakubboev added an individual bronze medal on board two. He followed that with major individual successes, including the 2023 Qatar Masters title, the 2024 UzChess Cup, and another Uzbek Championship in 2025. His run to the final weekend of the 2025 FIDE World Cup was another major step, showing that he can compete deep into the most demanding knockout events of the cycle. Yakubboev’s best chess combines positional confidence, practical aggression, and a willingness to keep pressing in structures where many players would settle too early.

Uzbek chess grandmaster, four-time national champion, and one of the leading players of Uzbekistan’s new generation.

Playing Style

Yakubboev’s style is practical, energetic, and well balanced. He is willing to enter sharp positions, but he usually does so from a stable strategic base rather than pure impulse. That makes him difficult to handle over a long tournament: he can grind small edges in controlled positions, yet he is also ready to accelerate when the position offers real attacking chances. His strongest recent results suggest a player who is becoming more complete without losing the fighting edge that drove his early rise.

Best Games

  • 2023
    vs Nodirbek Abdusattorov
    Qatar Masters, playoff

  • 2024
    vs Vidit Gujrathi
    UzChess Cup
A win over Vidit was one of the key results behind Yakubboev’s title run in Tashkent. It showed he could control a strong round robin against established elite opposition.
  • 2025
    vs Alexander Donchenko
FIDE World Cup, Quarterfinal, Game 1
Yakubboev scored the only decisive result of the opening quarterfinal games and moved to the edge of the semifinals. It was one of the biggest world championship-cycle wins of his career.
  • 2026
    vs David Anton Guijarro
    Prague Masters
This was one of the best fresh results on his card. Beating a strong and experienced grandmaster in Prague showed that Yakubboev’s rise had continued into elite invitational play.

Opening Repertoire
