Player Details

Leinier Dominguez Perez is an American chess grandmaster who for many years has been one of the most reliable elite players in the world. Born in Havana, he first rose to prominence as Cuba’s leading player, won five Cuban championships, and captured the 2008 World Blitz Championship. After switching federations in 2018, he became a major part of the American top tier and continued to deliver strong results in elite events. Dominguez reached a peak classical rating of 2768 in May 2014 and has remained relevant far beyond that peak thanks to his opening discipline, resilience, and endgame control. Even in late 2025, he was still producing world-class results, sharing second at the FIDE World Rapid Championship. His style is less about noise than efficiency: he rarely gives much away and remains one of the hardest players in the U.S. field to beat cleanly.

American chess grandmaster, former World Blitz Champion, and one of the most consistent elite players of his era.

Playing Style

Dominguez plays with control, accuracy, and very little wasted motion. He is not an overly flashy player, but that is precisely what makes him so difficult: he tends to choose sound structures, neutralize counterplay well, and wait for moments where small advantages become real chances. His best tournament runs are usually built on consistency rather than streaky form, and that stability has kept him relevant across different eras and federations. In faster formats, the same traits translate into strong practical results because he rarely drifts into chaos without purpose.

Best Games

  • 2021
    vs Levon Aronian
Champions Showdown: Chess 9LX, Final round
Dominguez won in the last round and took the overall title. It is one of his cleanest modern championship-clinching results and a strong example of his ability to finish events under pressure.
  • 2022
    vs Maxime Vachier-Lagrave
    FIDE Grand Prix
Dominguez’s win over Vachier-Lagrave pulled him level with the leaders in a high-stakes world championship cycle event. It stands out as one of his best post-transfer elite tournament wins.
  • 2024
    vs Ray Robson
    American Cup, Champions Bracket
A win over Robson in Saint Louis belongs here because it came in a major U.S. knockout event against another top domestic rival. It also fits his profile well: patient, prepared, and highly efficient.
  • 2025
    vs Rauf Mamedov
    FIDE World Rapid Championship
Dominguez finished tied for second in Doha, and this win was part of the run that carried him onto the medal-contending score. It is a good fresh addition because it shows he can still produce world-class results at the very top.

Opening Repertoire

Dominguez has one of the most coherent repertoires in the American elite. With White, his most-played openings run through the Ruy López, Giuoco Piano, Najdorf English Attack, and Caro-Kann Advance structures. With Black, he repeatedly trusts the Najdorf, Catalan Open Defense positions, English Symmetrical, and Semi-Tarrasch systems.

As White
  • Ruy López: Berlin Defense

    from 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Bc5.
  • Sicilian Defense: Najdorf, English Attack
    after 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 a6 6.Be3.

    from 1.c4 c5.
