Player Details

Aleksey Grebnev is a young grandmaster playing under the FIDE flag and one of the fastest-rising players of his generation. Born in Tolyatti in 2006, he moved from strong junior prospect to top-100 grandmaster in a very short span. His rise has been built on real tournament substance: he won the World Youth Under-18 title in 2023, repeated the feat in 2024, added the 2024 Asian Junior Championship, then followed with major open-event wins and a breakthrough run in the 2025 FIDE World Cup. By April 2026 he was inside the world top 100 and had already reached a peak classical rating of 2632. Grebnev’s profile is that of a modern young professional with serious upside: strong preparation, practical confidence, and results that already extend beyond junior chess.

FIDE grandmaster, two-time World Youth U18 champion, and one of the fastest-rising young players in chess.

Playing Style

Grebnev’s style is practical, composed, and increasingly dangerous against stronger opposition. He is comfortable in well-prepared openings, but the more notable trait is his calm handling of critical moments: his best recent knockout results came from keeping control when the pressure was highest. He does not need chaotic positions to generate chances, which is one reason his transition from junior events to open elite fields has looked convincing rather than accidental.

Best Games

  • 2023
    vs Ilamparthi A R
    World Youth Championship U18
Grebnev’s round-eight win with White gave him sole lead in the event and put him on course for the world youth title.
  • 2025
    vs Marc’Andria Maurizzi
    FIDE World Cup Qualification Match
After drawing the first game, Grebnev won the second and secured qualification for the World Cup. It was a major stepping stone in his jump from rising junior to world-level contender.
  • 2025
    vs David Navara
    FIDE World Cup, Round 2
Grebnev drew game one and won game two to take the match 1.5–0.5 against a long-established elite Czech grandmaster. This was one of the first clear signs that he could beat top-100 veterans in a knockout format.
  • 2025
    vs Maxime Vachier-Lagrave
    FIDE World Cup, Round 4
Grebnev eliminated one of the pre-tournament favorites and reached the last sixteen. It was the breakout result of his 2025 season.

Opening Repertoire

Grebnev’s repertoire already looks highly professional. His games show a willingness to enter mainstream theoretical lines, but also enough flexibility to switch to quieter move orders when match strategy demands it.
