This is a fundamental rule of chess, it occurs when a pawn moves to the opposite end of the board and can transform into stronger pieces. This can be a game changer as every pawn has the potential to level up and add a large material advantage.

What Is Pawn Promotion In Chess?

A pawn promotion is when the pawn reaches the far side of the board. Rank 8 for White, rank 1 for Black. After this, the pawn is then exchanged for a queen/rook/bishop/knight, normally and most commonly being the Queen. However underpromotion (rook/bishop/knight) may also be a more advantageous move.

The pawn is immediately promoted and cannot remain at the position unpromoted. Your endgame can turn more dynamic, adding urgency to the movement and strategy due to the extra material.

  2. Replace it with a piece of your choice.

Underpromotion: When Not to Choose a Queen

Underpromotion happens when the pawn becomes a rook, bishop, or knight. It’s less common but sometimes necessary:

  • Knight – Can deliver a fork or surprise check.
  • Rook – Useful to avoid stalemate or attack a back-rank weakness.
  • Bishop – Rare, but can control key diagonals.

Underpromotion is a strategic move. Strong players use it to gain advantage or prevent mistakes that queening might cause.
