Chess cheating should be a criminal offence, former world champion Vladimir Kramnik tells The World Chess Show

World Chess, the official online partner of the international chess federation FIDE, today announced that the latest episode of its global TV program, The World Chess Show, will highlight the problem of cheating in chess.
“The new episode of The World Chess Show is taking a deep dive into the biggest issue facing online chess: cheating,” said Ilya Merenzon, CEO of World Chess.
“As online chess has exploded, cheating has taken hold on some platforms. But we’re tackling it head-on and, in this episode, examining a subject that has been a huge elephant in the room in the industry for too long. We are not scared to address this problem, and we are showing how platforms can and should combat cheating.”
Hunting The Cheats
The Last Word On Cheating In Chess, episode 6 of The World Chess Show, will air in 100 markets across 20 networks from Tuesday, September 9. It features interviews with former World Champion Vladimir Kramnik, a leading campaigner for greater awareness and action on the issue.
“It is a fraud,” Kramnik told The World Chess Show. “I started a petition and I spoke with deputies at the Swiss parliament. Fortunately, they are on the same note with me, they agree that yes, it should be criminal. In September, they are supposed to vote on the new law that would make it criminal, not only in chess but in all computer games in Switzerland at least.”
If passed, Kramnik said a change in the law in Switzerland would be a “very important first step” that will “help the integrity of chess.”
WorldChess.com (http://worldchess.com/)’s Head of Fair Play expert Grandmaster Evgenij Miroshnichenko also lifts the lid on how cutting-edge tools, algorithms, and human expertise work together to detect suspicious games and protect the integrity of online chess.
The World Chess Show series showcases chess's biggest stars, intense rivalries, and iconic moments, blending elite competition with compelling storytelling. It is positioned to expand chess reach beyond dedicated players to a mainstream, intelligent audience that appreciates drama, strategy, and innovation.
World Chess operates WorldChess.com, the official FIDE online chess platform, allowing players to gain recognized ratings and titles.
