Firouzja Puts His Feet Up: Injured Star Out Of Superbet Chess Classic

World number-five GM Alireza Firouzja rarely puts a foot wrong in chess. But he did at the Superbet Chess Classic Romania 2026.
After suffering an unexplained ankle injury, France's star has now withdrawn from the second leg of the Grand Chess Tour (GCT) season. It ends a bizarre drama and leaves the $450,000 event bereft of its box office attraction.
The announcement came on Wednesday in a statement released by GCT organisers, confirming Firouzja would play no further part in the Bucharest event.
"Unfortunately, due to an ankle injury sustained during the event, I have decided to withdraw from the tournament," Firouzja said. "Thank you to the organisers for their support and accommodations, and thank you to everyone following the games. I wish the players and organisers the best for the rest of the tournament."
Having been a no show for his game against GM Fabiano Caruana in Round 4, Firouzja was given special permission to play his Round 5 game against GM Javokhir Sindarov from a hotel room.
Incredibly, Firouzja saved a poor position to escape with a draw. It made for a unique and memorable moment in chess, and was captured here by the photographer Lennart Ootes:

The Firouzja-Caruana encounter was rearranged for Tuesday, the rest day, and the injured star this time appeared in a protective boot, again played from a bed in the hotel.
Firouzja made a mistake on move 37 and went on to lose. With that, he was done. Firouzja left with a score of 1 out of 5.
'It Was Very, Very Weird'
Caruana said afterwards: "It was a very, very weird experience, of course. To actually play in the hotel room, at the start it didn’t feel like we were playing. I thought we were playing some casual chess.
"It had kind of vibes of a World Championship match, except my opponent was on the bed, in a cast. It’s just very bad luck for him. He just fell and messed his ankle up, and he decided to play on for a few games.
"I feel sorry for Alireza that he can't continue the tournament. It’s just unfortunate."
Tournament officials added: "We thank Alireza for his efforts to continue competing despite the injury and wish him a speedy recovery. We hope to see him back at the board soon."

It is an unusual development even by elite chess standards—although, as World Chess recently explored, top-level tournaments are increasingly beginning to resemble endurance events.
Firouzja's withdrawal is particularly disappointing because the 22-year-old remains one of the game's biggest attractions. Since exploding onto the elite scene as a teenager, the French star has built a reputation for fiery, attacking chess.
Fans had hoped the Superbet Chess Classic would perhaps provide a signal that he is ready to mount another challenge for the world title cycle.
Instead, the tournament loses one of its most unpredictable players midway through the event.
The Superbet Chess Classic Romania is one of the flagship stops on the Grand Chess Tour calendar, regularly attracting many of the strongest grandmasters in the world. This year’s edition in Bucharest once again featured a stacked field.
Firouzja's exit is a sad exit for a player who is yet to reach his undoubted potential. We hope he recovers.
