Another World Championship is coming to chess. Well, sort of.
This November, the mighty GM Magnus Carlsen will headline a stellar field in Budapest for the first Total Chess World Championship Tour pilot, a new competition combining fast classical, rapid and blitz chess.
It has the backing of FIDE, has been created by the team behind Norway Chess, with celebrity investment, and next year will crown a new official titleholder: the FIDE World Combined Champion.
Where this title-holder will stand in the pantheon of chess remains to be seen, but the idea is straightforward enough. Instead of deciding who is best at one particular speed of chess, Total Chess wants to find the player who can do everything.
And Carlsen—who walked away from the traditional World Championship after deciding he no longer enjoyed its months of preparation and marathon classical matches—is very much on board.
The full Total Chess World Championship Tour begins in 2027. But first comes a 24-player pilot event in Budapest designed to test the format.
Here is everything you need to know.
What Is Total Chess?
Total Chess is a new FIDE-approved competition combining three different forms of the game:
Fast Classic: 45 minutes plus 30 seconds per move
Rapid: 15 minutes plus 10 seconds per move
Blitz: three minutes plus two seconds per move
The eventual aim is to crown the player who performs best across all three.
It is effectively chess's answer to the all-rounder.
Or, as GM Viswanathan Anand has put it, something resembling a sporting triathlon.
The competition has been developed, owned and operated by Norway Chess, with FIDE approval.
The 2026 tournament is a pilot. The full multi-event World Championship Tour is scheduled to begin in March 2027.
When Is Total Chess 2026?
The Total Chess pilot runs from November 10 to 21, 2026.
The opening ceremony and a nine-round blitz tournament take place on November 10.
The main group stage runs from November 11 to 15, followed by a rest day.
The knockout stage then begins on November 17.
Where Is Total Chess 2026?
The pilot takes place at the Anantara New York Palace Hotel in Budapest, Hungary.
Budapest is becoming familiar territory for elite chess. The Hungarian capital staged the 2024 Chess Olympiad and will now be used as the testing ground for one of FIDE's most ambitious attempts to create a new World Championship.
Who Is Playing In Total Chess 2026?
The organisers have initially announced 18 players for the 24-player field.
And it is some line-up.

Six further players are due to be announced.
The field already contains eight of the world's top 10 from the August classical rankings and an intriguing mixture of established stars and younger players.
Carlsen is the obvious headline act. But he always is.
But Caruana, Firouzja, Praggnanandhaa, Abdusattorov, Keymer, Arjun and Niemann should make this much more than the Magnus show.
Are Gukesh And Sindarov Playing?
No—and there is a fairly obvious reason.
World Champion GM Gukesh D and his challenger GM Javokhir Sindarov both qualified for invitations to the pilot, but neither appears in the announced field.
They have something else to worry about: their 2026 FIDE World Championship Match takes place immediately afterwards in Geneva.
With the Total Chess pilot running until November 21 and the World Championship beginning only days later, playing a demanding event in Budapest immediately before the biggest match of their careers was never particularly realistic.
It creates an unusual situation.
The world's newest FIDE-backed championship will begin without either player contesting FIDE's oldest and most important individual title.
Is Hikaru Nakamura Playing Total Chess?
GM Hikaru Nakamura also qualified for an invitation through the January 2026 rating list but is absent from the first announced line-up.
That means three of the most obvious names—Gukesh, Sindarov and Nakamura—are missing.
Even so, the presence of Carlsen and Caruana and the depth of the remaining field means the pilot will still contain much of the world's elite.
Why Is Magnus Carlsen Playing?
This may be the most interesting part of the whole project.
Carlsen voluntarily gave up the classical World Championship title after defending it successfully four times. His problem was the format, these days he prefers to mix it up.
Carlsen made it clear, and has consistently since, that months of opening preparation followed by a long head-to-head classical match no longer appealed to him.
Total Chess looks much closer to the sort of competition Carlsen has repeatedly advocated: different time controls, less opportunity to prepare every opening variation to death and a greater premium on being an adaptable chess player.
When the concept was unveiled, Carlsen described combining multiple formats under one title as a way of providing "a more complete view" of chess. This is how he sees the game these days: not as a long theoretical slog for perfection.
For FIDE, the often criticised world governing body of chess, the one that let its biggest star slip through its grasp, gets him back competing for a FIDE-recognised world title again. Win-win.
How Does Total Chess Work?
This is where things become slightly more complicated. The 24 players are divided into four groups of six.
The group stage is a double round-robin, meaning everybody plays the other five players in their group twice.
That gives each player 10 games across five days.
But those games are all played at the new Fast Classic time control: 45 minutes plus a 30-second increment per move.
And Total Chess has borrowed another idea increasingly seen in modern elite tournaments.
A win is worth three points. A draw is worth one. A loss gets nothing. The idea is: let's have a tournament with not too many draws.
What Is Fast Classic?
Fast Classic is the bridge between traditional classical chess and rapid.
Each player starts with 45 minutes, with another 30 seconds added after every move.
That is considerably faster than a conventional elite classical game but still gives players enough time for sustained calculation.
Total Chess regards it as one of its three core disciplines alongside rapid and blitz.
Whether players — and fans — eventually regard it as classical chess is another question.
The Budapest pilot should give us our first proper answer.
How Does The Knockout Stage Work?
After the group stage, players move into knockout brackets according to where they finished.
And this is where Total Chess becomes genuinely different.
Each knockout match takes place over two days and includes all three time controls.
On each day the players face:
Four blitz games
Two rapid games
One Fast Classic game
But the games are not worth the same amount.
A blitz win is worth one point.
A rapid win is worth four.
A Fast Classic victory is worth eight.
Draws are worth half those amounts.
That weighting means the slower the chess, the more valuable the result.
Scores reset each day, and if the players remain tied after the second day, the match goes to Armageddon.
What Happens In Armageddon?
Here it gets hairy. The basic rules are: White receives 10 minutes, Black gets seven, Black has draw odds. And there's a scramble.
There is no increment until move 41, when one second per move begins.
The player with the greater combined points total over the two days gets first choice of colour. If they are level, the players bid for the right to choose.
Why Is There A Blitz Tournament Before The Event?
Before any of that happens, all 24 players contest a nine-round blitz Swiss on November 10. The results are used for group-stage tiebreak rankings, so Total Chess effectively starts before the Total Chess group stage starts.
Is Total Chess Really A World Championship?
Well, not yet. Budapest 2026 is a pilot tournament.
It is being used to test the rules and format before the full Total Chess World Championship Tour launches in 2027.
From 2027, the plan is for three 24-player tournaments in different locations. Players accumulate Tour points from those events and the top four qualify for a Grand Final.
The winner of that Grand Final will be crowned the FIDE World Combined Champion.
So whoever wins Budapest this November will have won the Total Chess pilot—not become FIDE World Combined Champion.
How Will The Full Total Chess World Championship Work?
Each of the first three Tour events will feature 24 players.
Group and knockout results generate Tour points, with the winner of the strongest knockout bracket earning 30 points.
There are also bonuses for players winning multiple Tour events.
After three legs, the four players with the most points qualify for the Grand Final.
There, first plays fourth and second plays third in the semifinals.
The final itself is scheduled to take place across four days and two sets, again using the mixture of Fast Classic, rapid and blitz.
Win both sets and you become FIDE World Combined Champion.
If the players split them 1–1, blitz and ultimately Armageddon decide the title.
What Is The Total Chess Prize Fund?
For the full Tour, Total Chess has announced a minimum annual prize pool of $2.7 million.
Each of the first three tournaments will carry at least $750,000.
The four-player Grand Final will have at least another $450,000.
There will also be performance bonuses.
The published regulations describe that prize structure for the full Total Chess World Championship Tour rather than a separate final prize breakdown for the Budapest pilot.
How Do Players Qualify For Total Chess?
This is another significant aspect of the project.
Total Chess is not intended simply to be an invitational tournament in which organisers choose whichever stars they want.
Qualification routes include the classical World Champions, World Rapid and Blitz results, classical rating, Candidates tournaments and the FIDE Circuit.
The original qualification list for Budapest included Gukesh and Women's World Champion GM Ju Wenjun as reigning World Champions; Carlsen, Artemiev and Arjun through the 2025 World Rapid Championship; Abdusattorov and Vachier-Lagrave through the World Blitz; and a series of players through the January 2026 classical rating list.
Sindarov and Vaishali qualified by winning the 2026 Candidates tournaments.
Qualifying, however, earns the right to receive an invitation rather than guaranteeing participation — which helps explain why the final Budapest field looks different.

Group-stage play is scheduled to begin at 3pm CET each day.
During the knockout phase, blitz begins at 3pm, rapid at 4.15pm and Fast Classic at 6.45pm.
The organisers describe the pilot as running through November 21, although the currently published playing schedule lists the final competitive day as November 20.

Who Is Behind Total Chess — And Who Has Invested In It?
Total Chess isn't short of ambition — or financial backing.
The championship was created by the team behind Norway Chess, which has brought in a striking collection of investors from outside the chess world as it prepares to launch the new tour.
The biggest name is Manchester City superstar Erling Haaland.
Haaland became an investor in Norway Chess in March 2026, joining forces with Norwegian businessman Morten Borge to establish Chess Mates, which became a significant shareholder in the company.
"I'm investing in Norway Chess because I believe the new Total Chess World Championship Tour can turn chess into an even bigger sport for spectators around the world," Haaland said.
A month later, Norway Chess announced it had raised another $10 million, valuing the company at $35 million.
Among the new investors was another Norwegian sporting superstar, Johannes Høsflot Klæbo, the most decorated Winter Olympian in history.
Former cycling world champion Thor Hushovd is also among the shareholders, alongside a group of prominent Norwegian investors and business figures.
The money is intended to help develop Total Chess into a global tour, with organisers talking openly about taking inspiration from Formula 1 and dramatically increasing the commercial and broadcast value of elite chess.
That makes Total Chess more than simply another new tournament.
It is also a significant bet that elite chess can be packaged as a much bigger global spectator sport.
Is Total Chess Replacing The Classical World Championship?
No.
Gukesh and Sindarov will still compete for the traditional FIDE World Championship title in Geneva.
Total Chess creates a separate world title designed to measure performance across different speeds of chess.
The traditional, much-loved by the purists classical World Championship is intended to identify the strongest player in chess's longest-established elite format.
Total Chess wants to answer a different question: Who is the best all-round chess player in the world?
Will that question inevitably lead back to Carlsen?
Budapest is the experiment. In 2027, we find out whether Total Chess is here to stay.
